The story goes like this. A16-year-old girl survived a direct lightning strike because the lightning hit the gold cross she was wearing around her neck. The cross and the gold chain it was hanging from evaporated and left the girl unharmed. The girl’s name was Marina Motygina and she hailed from Ekaterinburg in Russia’s Ural Mountains. She and her friend Anya went to a local swimming hole in the middle of a large meadow. Marina had just got out of water when a thunderstorm broke out.

When I first heard about this story I was intrigued but then I began to think about it. First, would gold evaporate if it was hit by lightning? Probably not, but it is a better conductor of electricity than the human body so if the girl was struck the pendant would have drawn the electricity away from her heart. This would have allowed her experience the bolt (and she had the burn in her feet to prove it) without killing her. It is much more likely that the pendant and chain broke and were lost in the field. Still a pretty amazing stroke of luck.
